Where To Buy Fresh Roasted Coffee Online

Finding fresh roasted coffee in your area might be easier said than done. The closest roaster to me is 15 miles in a direction I rarely travel. While I do make the trip whenever I can sometimes it’s just not that convenient.

We all have families, jobs, chores and other responsibilities. We’re all very busy, and that’s exactly why we need good coffee, and we need it DELIVERED.

Good news, there are some quality online options to have fresh roasted coffee shipped directly to your doorstep. These are the places I have found to buy fresh roasted coffee online.  I’ll continue to add to the last as I find more high-quality coffee retailers.

Volcanica Coffee

Volcanica Coffee is a specialty retailer of exotic gourmet coffee based it Atlanta.  They specialize in high-quality coffee from volcanic regions around the world.  Imagine waking up each morning and drinking a cup of coffee brewed from beans that grew on a volcano.  Sounds like the recipe for a superhero to me.

Products and Price

Volcanica Coffee offers 120 different coffees including single-origin, estate, peaberry, decaf, and flavored coffee. Available in whole bean, drip grind, espresso grind, or french press.  16oz bags range in price from $15.99 to $419. Intelligentsia Coffee

Intelligentsia Coffee is a US coffee roaster and retailer based in Chicago.  They were founded in 1995, and now have retail locations in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston.  Intelligentsia prides themselves on being a pioneer of the Direct Trade practice.  Direct trade allows them to cut out importers and exporters and deal directly with the growers.

On their website, they state, “We believe coffee in all its forms – whole bean, brewed, and espresso – should be an approachable, accessible luxury.”  One way they are making it accessible is allowing consumers to place orders directly on their website.

Products and Prices

There are over 20 different varieties of coffee offered on their website.  They have  Single Origin, Blends, Decaf, In Season, and Direct Trade coffees. Most come in 12oz or 5lb options and you can choose from whole bean or a variety of grinds based on your brewing method.

Prices range from about $14 up to as much as $50 and you’ll get free shipping the US if you spend more than 40 bucks.  If you’re not looking to spend $40, and you just want to have a 12 oz package delivered, you will be looking at about $5 for standard shipping.

Orders placed before 3 are roasted, packed, and shipped the next day. Orders placed after 3 on Thursday or Friday will ship the following Monday.

Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle coffee is a roaster and retailer based in California.  They have several cafes located in the Bay Area,  New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Miami, Boston, and even Tokyo. Nestle acquired the majority share of the company, so I’m sure they will be expanding to more locations in the future.  Until then, we can order coffee directly from their website, and have it shipped ready to brew.

Their site has a 10 question quiz used to match you with your perfect coffee. Everybody loves quizzes, right? One of the questions on the quiz was, “What type of salad dressing do you prefer?”  I chose ranch. Based on my responses to the quiz they recommended a single origin, Myanmar Shan State Shwe Chinthe, and a blend, Bella Donovan. They both sound – difficult to pronounce, but how can I resist a coffee that was recommended based on my preference for ranch dressing?

Products and Prices

Blue Bottle has over 15 varieties of coffee to try, including limited releases, blends, single origin, espresso, and decaf.  You can choose between either whole bean or “perfectly ground.” If you choose perfectly ground, not only can you can specify your brewing method and have your coffee ground accordingly, but your coffee will come hermetically sealed.  Air is the enemy of ground coffee. Since your coffee will be shipped in an oxygen-free package it will taste like it was freshly ground whenever you are ready to enjoy.

If you decide to go with the whole bean option, you will be able to choose between a 6oz bag or 12oz.  This is a nice option if you want to try something new and don’t want to shell out the money for a full bag before you know if you’ll like it.

The 6 oz whole bean bags are $9. The 12 oz bags are $17. For the Perfectly Ground option, you get 5 single-serve packages for $17.50.

Your order ships in 1 to 2 business days.  Blue Bottle offers free shipping on orders over $50. Standard shipping is around $7.00 and will arrive in  3 to 5 business days. Your order is roasted the same day it ships.

Happy Mug

Happy Mug is a coffee company based in Pennsylvania.  They are primarily a coffee wholesaler, but they also sell their coffee retail at a reasonable price.  They pride themselves on only buying organically grown coffee from responsible sources, and they only buy the top 3% rated beans in any given country.  I really like their website.  I found the no-frills style refreshing.  You won’t find any fancy pictures of farms here, just a simple, easy to navigate website with plenty of coffee.

Products and Prices

They have over 40 varieties of roasted coffee separated into the following categories: Standards, Espresso, Specialty Mug, and Flavored. You can choose from whole bean, coarse, medium or fine ground. Their coffee also comes in 16oz bags – That’s right, a full pound! If you are interested in roasting your own coffee, good news.  They also sell unroasted coffee! I wrote a full review of my experience with Happy Mug.  You can find it here.

The green coffee ranges from $3.50/pound to $6.75/pound. Standards and flavored coffees are $11/pound and specialty coffees are $13/pound. Orders placed by noon EST, Monday thru Friday will ship the same day. All other orders ship the next day.  Most orders are shipped US priority mail. Larger items may be shipped UPS or FedEx.  Orders that contain only roasted coffee and teas ship for just $3.
