4 Types of Coffee Drinkers in “Sneaky Pete”

I  love finding coffee references in pop culture.  While binge-watching Season 2 of “Sneaky Pete,” one scene jumped out at me.  There is a great moment at the beginning of episode 6 where 3 different types of coffee drinkers are having a discussion about coffee. It is a great scene that really encapsulates the wide range of coffee drinkers – from the guy looking for a simple cup of caffeine to the homicidal maniac who will put you in a tub of acid if he catches you using a blade grinder. Some of you can probably relate.  What kind of coffee drinker are you?  Leave me a comment!

“Sneaky Pete”

“Sneaky Pete” is the story of a con-man, Marius, who assumes the life and identity of his former cellmate, Pete, in an effort to escape the repercussions of his pre-prison life.  In order to maintain his cover, Marius finds himself in dangerous situations that test his skill as a con-man.

The Coffee Episode – 11 Million Reasons You Can’t Go Home Again

This episode depicts four distinct types of coffee drinkers, the Coffee Fanatic, and 3 other coffee drinkers. Coffee is a part of all their lives, but the degree and complexity vary.  What type of coffee drinker are you? Leave a comment letting me know which type of coffee drinker you are most like.  Now, let’s take a look at the 4 types of coffee drinkers found in the episode.

The scene begins with Luka Delchev pouring water slowly from his gooseneck kettle into a Chemex coffee brewer.  Luka is originally from Montenegro. He stole millions of dollars before coming to the United States and is now notorious for dissolving people in sulfuric acid.  He is the main antagonist in season 2 and has hired two henchmen, Frank and Joe, to help him get 11 million dollars back that was stolen from him years ago. We are going to call Luca Delchev The Coffee Fanatic.

Coffee Drinker # 1: The Coffee Fanatic

The Coffee Fanatic is obsessed with every step of the coffee process, and the need to control it,  from where the beans are grown to the glass you drink from. The coffee fanatic is a bit of a psycho.  I meant that in the best way possible of course, but not for Luka. Luka is a psycho thru and thru. He dissolves people in acid.  Just saying.

“This is bloom pour,” Luka says.  “Slow steady circles take time. The coffee, fine grind, less bitter, rich color nice viscosity.”

Coffee Drinker #2: The Coffee Enthusiast

Enter the Coffee Enthusiast.  “It’s a good bean,” Joe replies to Luka.

Joe is one of Luka’s hired henchmen and he is the Coffee Enthusiast.  The enthusiast is more sophisticated than your average caffeine drinker and truly appreciates “good bean.”  While the Coffee Enthusiast does enjoy a great tasting cup of coffee they probably don’t have much time to get wrapped up in all the intricacies of brewing craft coffee at home. The exchange between the fanatic and the enthusiast continues:

“A good bean? Yes, “ Luka laughs, like a true fanatic. “A man who appreciates coffee.”

“Yeah, ya spend as much time in a car as I do, you know? You like a good cup of coffee,” Joe says.

The Coffee Enthusiast likes “a good cup of coffee”  and can tell the difference between a good cup and a bad cup.  The next type of coffee drinker, on the other hand, thinks that bad tasting coffee is normal.

Coffee Drinker #3 The Caffeine Drinker

The caffeine drinker needs their morning coffee, but they don’t really care what it tastes like. If they have a cuppa that tastes good it is an added bonus.   For them, coffee is just a caffeine delivery system.  If they ran out of coffee, don’t be surprised if in a pinch they just reused the grounds left in their drip machine from their previous pot.  Frank is a caffeine drinker and he thinks all of this talk of beans and grinds is nonsense.

“That’s fine.  I don’t know if you need all this hipster bullshit,” Frank says.

“Fuck Hipsters!” Luka shouts.  “I’ve been doing this shit for 30 years”

“I’m just saying, give me a cup of Dunkin Donuts,” says Frank

“How about I give you cup of hot piss? Huh,” Luka barks.  “Take lesson from friend he has taste.”

The exchange between the Fanatic and the Caffeine Drinker is my favorite part of the conversation, and they also bring up the final type of coffee drinker.

Coffee Drinker #4 The Hipster

The final type of coffee drinker represented in “Sneaky Pete” is The Hipster. While they are not present in the scene they are definitely part of the coffee drinking world of “Sneaky Pete, ” and as Luka says, “Fuck hipsters!”

There are as many different types of people who drink coffee as there are ways to drink it.  Of course, not everyone who drinks coffee fits neatly into one of these groups, but who knows, you might be able to relate to one of these characters.  I really enjoyed this scene because it shoves these 3 different types of coffee drinkers in one room, and in spite of their differences, they have two things in common: they enjoy coffee and hate hipsters.  Thanks for reading!
